A draisine is a lightweight rail vehicle primarily used for technical and maintenance purposes on railways. Its main function is to enable track inspections, repairs, maintenance, and the transport of workers and tools along railway lines.

History:

The first rail draisine was built in 1830, developed in response to the growing railway network and the need for efficient track inspection. The name comes from Karl Drais, the inventor of an earlier road-going draisine — the forerunner of the bicycle.

Uses:

  • Inspecting track conditions and signaling systems.
  • Transporting maintenance crews and equipment.
  • Supporting modernization and emergency repair work.

Types of Propulsion:

  • Manual – powered by hand, often using a pumping lever (commonly known as handcars).
  • Foot-powered – pedal-driven, similar to a bicycle.
  • Motorized – powered by combustion engines or electric motors, found in more modern service units.

Structure:

  • Lightweight frame made of wood or metal.
  • Designed to run on standard railway tracks.
  • May include a canopy, lights, communication systems, and seating.
